Required Courses for a M.A.W. Degree (Semester system)
[Special Note -- The M.A. in Writing is being phased out. Northeastern University is no longer accepting applicants for the MAW. You are welcome to take courses for graduate credit as a special student. The following information is meant as reference information for participants already enrolled in the program.}
Beginning in Fall 2003, the following will be required for all
degree
candidates and will usually be offered each summer:
--ENG 392 Writing and the Teaching of Writing (3 cr.)
--ENG 391 Reading and the Teaching of Reading (3 cr.)
--ENG 121 Approaches to Teaching English Language Arts (3 cr.)
The teacher Research Sequence (6 cr.) which consists of:
--ENG 601 Designing Teacher-Research (2 cr.) [Summer, second
session]
--ENG 602 Teacher-Research Fieldwork (3 cr.) [Fall semester]
--ENG 603 Teacher-Research Final Project (1 cr.) [Spring semester]
Four electives (usually 3 cr. each). Elective offerings vary each year. Recent topics include:
--Literature Circles
--Extending the Literacy Spectrum
--The Process of Playwriting
--Multiliteracies: Writing in the 21st Century
--Writing Workshop: Multigenre papers
--Author studies
--Writing the Memoir
--Teaching in a Diverse Society
